How TikTok hooks actually work (and the 5 patterns that stop the scroll)
The first 1.5 seconds decide everything. Here are the five patterns TikLab uses when generating hooks, with examples you can copy.
How TikTok hooks actually work
The first 1.5 seconds of your TikTok decide everything. After that, the viewer has either stayed or scrolled. The hook is the spoken line that earns those 1.5 seconds.
We studied the top-performing videos across fitness, finance, beauty, tech, food, and travel and found that every viral hook uses one of five patterns.
1. Curiosity gap
Open a question the viewer needs answered. The gap between what they know and what you promised creates tension that pulls them in.
"I tried 5 viral mobility routines — three of them are useless."
"The cheapest way to invest $100 that nobody talks about."
2. Bold claim
Say something that sounds exaggerated. The viewer's brain will pause to see if you can back it up.
"Your warmup is 1990s advice."
"This 30-second routine will save your shoulders."
3. Direct callout
Use "you" specifically. The viewer feels personally addressed and is more likely to keep watching.
"If your heels lift during a swing, stop. Here's why."
"If you use retinol without sunscreen, stop."
4. Pattern interrupt
Open with something unexpected — a noise, a wrong assumption, a contrarian take. The viewer's auto-pilot scroll breaks.
"Stop swinging the kettlebell like this."
"The 4% rule is broken. Here's the math."
5. Negativity bias
Humans pay more attention to threats than rewards. Lead with what to avoid.
"Three kettlebell mistakes wrecking your lower back."
"Five investing mistakes that quietly cost you $50K."
The formula
The best hooks combine two of these. For example:
"Stop swinging the kettlebell like this" (pattern interrupt + direct callout)
"I tried 5 viral mobility routines — three of them are useless" (curiosity gap + negativity bias)
When TikLab generates hooks, you get one of each pattern plus a score (1-100) and a one-line reason. Pick the one that fits your voice, or combine two patterns into your own.
